THE CHALLENGE

The IU School of Informatics, established in 2000, was spread across multiple buildings without room for expansion. Three academic units would combine into one building, Luddy Hall. One of the three units, Intelligent Systems Engineering, was a new program. This department’s functionalal needs were not established until late into the design and construction process.

OUR SOLUTION

Four Point worked with faculty to develop a completely flexible office. The private office included a “kit of parts” incorporating all freestanding mobile pieces that adjusted to needs of the faculty members. By standardizing all departments with this flexible office, department sizes could flex throughout the building as needed. Fabrication labs with maker technologies and turn-to-team classrooms provide faculty members choices in the set up of their individual teaching spaces.

THE RESULT

After occupancy many of the offices were converted to shared offices due to ongoing growth. Because the furniture in the offices was designed to be flexible and mobile, this was easily accomplished by the owner with zero furniture wasted and minimal expense.
