At Four Point Design, we work with a variety of partners who provide products and solutions for our client’s spaces. And part of being “on point” with our clients involves taking advantage of opportunities to learn more about these products and solutions. Case in point: Chloe Freund and Emma Walsh recently took a trip to Grand Rapids, Michigan, to visit Steelcase, a manufacturer of furniture for hospitals, classrooms, and offices. The trip provided several examples of approaches to thoughtful interior and product design.
Research is critical in informing healthcare interior design and furniture. Evidence-based strategies apply to both the delivery of healthcare and the design of interior healthcare spaces and products. Chloe and Emma noted Steelcase’s approach to research and evidence-based design, from engaging users in the design process to bringing a team of researchers and industrial designers to observe actual waiting rooms.

Testing is key for functionality and performance. Chloe and Emma appreciated learning about how Steelcase tests their furniture both dynamically (repeatedly placing weight on and off the furniture) and statically (placing weight on the furniture for a long period of time). “This gives teams a better idea of how the furniture will perform over time under the stress of repeated use,” Emma said.
Small details make a big difference in how products work and feel. From hand grips on a chair’s arm caps to “wallsaver legs” that help protect walls and the chair from damage, details can both improve the patient experience and reduce future maintenance needs.
Wellness and respite spaces are important investments that can take many forms. Spaces for wellness and respite have increased in popularity in recent years, and for good reason. They contribute to the overall well-being and comfort of caregivers in healthcare settings (and beyond). “In Steelcase’s healthcare show room, they included a small respite area, demonstrating that you don't need a lot of square footage to provide a quiet space to recharge and focus,” Chloe said.
Four Point Design thanks Steelcase and Business Furniture for the opportunity to connect and learn more about Steelcase and its products.
